Crooked Kisses

Crooked Kisses

Crooked Kisses is where Jupe Jupe scale back their prog rock influences and pump out the synth-pop. Two previous albums teased between styles, but on the Seattle band’s third album, they realize where their talents lay. Ten songs and not a loser among them prove that they’ve been working harder than ever. Singer/keyboardist My Young is front and center, locking in with Jarrod Arbini on drums and leaving much less work for guitarists Bryan Manzo and Patrick Partington in terms of real presence. Producer Martin Feveryear (R.E.M., Robert Fripp, Death Cab for Cutie) believes in dynamics and allotting for the spaces where tension builds and is eventually released. Even a tune with the potentially lugubrious title “Darkness” turns into a multi-sequenced dance-pop tune worthy of New Order—and that’s just one of the album’s deep tracks. The immediate accessibility of “Pieces of You,” “New Stars in the Sky” (where the Pet Shop Boys influence shines proudly), and “All the Things We Made” demand an immediate reaction.
